PJM Interconnection, the organization responsible for the safety and reliability of the regional electric transmission system, has directed BGE to upgrade the electric transmission system in our service area due to the retirement of the Brandon Shores generation station. This work is an opportunity to expedite the permanent removal of nearly 1,300 Megawatts of coal-fueled electricity from Maryland’s energy mix – and the resulting emissions from Maryland’s communities.
These system upgrades are necessary in order to maintain electric reliability for customers throughout the mid-Atlantic region. This work will occur in a short time-period and includes the construction of two new substations, install upgrades at three existing substations, and 37 miles of transmission lines on BGE’s existing rights-of-way.
BGE is equipped to execute this work efficiently, with a focus on cost-effectiveness, and customer-service.
